The Great Wall of China, symbolizing China’s ancient civilization, stands erect proudly as one of the most famous, grand and splendid ancient constructional wonders of the world. This architectural marvel, quite expectedly, has been listed as one of the Seven Wonders of the World. The Great Wall started being built in the 7th century BC and it achieved the name of 'Great Wall' in the Qin Dynasty in 221 BC. The last large-scale work on the Great Wall was carried out during the time of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). The total length of the Ming Great Wall is more than 7000 km (3720 miles) and passes through nine cities and provinces.The lion's share of the Great Wall in the Beijing area fall under the Ming Great Wall, which is about 600 kilometers long. The most loved and hence popular sections of the Great Wall are the Mutianyu Great Wall, the Jinshanling Great Wall, the Huanghuacheng Great Wall, the Simatai Great Wall, the Gubeikou Great Wall, the Jiankou Great Wall, the Badaling Great Wall and the Juyongguan Pass. The Great Wall, however, consists of a series of walls and fortifications and is not a ‘single’ wall that the name might suggest.
